The Spores - Doom Pop
The Spores live shows have made such an impression on me that every time they visit our little country, me and Napalm Lex team up to pay them a visit. At their last show which will be reviewed here shortly by my aforementioned colleague I picked up a copy of their debut album Imagine The Future. Prior to that I already received a promo copy of their second album Doom Pop, which I will review here for your now.
For starters this album contains no metal, so if thats what floats your boat stop reading. The Spores are an experimental pop trio, toying around with genres like electro, stoner, pop and rock thus creating rocking electro beats, stoner riffs, ambient spacing, beautiful ballads, poetic lyrics and in general just great catchy and original songs. Bassist/vocalist Molly McGuire possesses a very smooth and sweet voice, which appeals to the almost playful electro beats and stoner riffs perfectly. There is honestly not one track that I dont like here on Doom Pop.
The fun thing is that although it doesnt sound that heavy on record (even though it has more rock parts than their debut), live it just completely blows the shit out of you. The new drummer is also a more than worthy replacement, taking the band to higher levels with his powerful yet groovy beats.
So if you into poprock that is original yet fit for mainstream consumption you ought to give The Spores a try. It helps if you smoke weed and already like stuff like Muse, Ghinzu and Queens Of The Stone Age and such. Sit back, relax and enjoy some Doom Pop!
